The Perfect First Date
You searched the online profiles. You made a connection. You started emailing. Now, you're ready for your first date. The first rule you need to embrace with an online match is don't panic. It is just a chance to meet a potentially interesting person. They're not going to become your soul mate or whisk you off on a world cruise. Of course, that can still happen, but give it time. This first date is about getting to know the person. Best-case scenario: You hit it off and set up a second date. Worst-case scenario: Your date didn't turn out to be what you expect. No worries. Just scratch them off the list and move on to the next one. No harm, no foul.
Here are some other suggestions to help ensure you have a perfect first date.
Take the Pressure Off
Just because you like to dine in a four-star restaurant doesn't mean you have to go there on your first date. Yes, it would be nice but is it fair to drop a lot of money when you're just getting to know someone? You want to keep this first date casual. Meeting for coffee or drinks is always a good way to go. That can lead to dinner if things are going well. If you can meet somewhere that is relaxing, then your date will be relaxed and things will go a lot smoother.
Have A Plan B
You might have picked out the perfect spot for your first rendezvous. What happens if you show up and the place is closed? What if it is too noisy? What if your ex is sitting at the bar? You need to have a backup plan ready that you can activate in a snap.
Keep It Short
On the romantic side of things, a perfect first date will last forever. In reality, you want that first date to be short. Setting up a five-hour museum tour might not be the way to go. Remember, you still don't know this person. That means you should have an "out" if that person turns out to be not so charming. Hopefully, your date turns out to be wonderful and you end up talking into the small hours. Nothing wrong with that, but start with the "short date" plan.
Coordinate Your Outfits
If you pick a spot for your first date and let the other person know that this place is "totally casual," then you're clueing them in on what to wear. That might not matter to you as much as it will to your date. You don't want to show up in formal wear if your date is dressed for a day at the beach. Awkward!
Listen More, Talk Less
The perfect date will have an even split in the conversation. You'll both have a chance to talk and listen. However, your default should always be to "listen more, talk less." It might not turn out that way, but it is a good goal to have.
Turn Off the Cell
Definitely let your friends know where you're going on your date. However, they don't need to have a play-by-play. When your date arrives, make a point of turning off your cell phone. This will show your date that you're giving them your undivided attention. That's a good way to start any date.
